The Caribbean side of Costa Rica, specifically the tourist area from Cahuita to Manzanillo.
This region includes two national parks — Cahuita and Manzanillo — and features some of the best beaches in Costa Rica, such as Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, and Cocles.
The most convenient way to reach this area is by taking a domestic flight from San José International Airport to the local airport in Limón. From there, you can rent a car and drive to the Puerto Viejo area. Alternatively, there are shuttle transfers available from San José.

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) has reported a substantial increase in the number of tourists visiting Costa Rica in 2024 compared to 2023.
ICT data shows that 92% of tourists arrive in the country by air, with the majority coming from the United States and Canada.
“These remarkable results highlight a dynamic, growing, and resilient tourism sector,” – said William Rodríguez, the Minister of Tourism.
The ICT expects a record-breaking 3 million tourists by the end of 2024, exceeding the 2.5 million visitors recorded in 2023.
North America contributed three-quarters of all visitors to Costa Rica, with the United States accounting for 61%, followed by Canada (10%) and Mexico (2.8%). European visitors were led by travelers from France (2.8%), Germany (2.6%), and the United Kingdom (2.5%).
The area offers both public and private hospitals, providing comprehensive healthcare services. For more specialized needs, large clinics are available in nearby Limón. Overall, the standard of healthcare in this region is excellent, consistent with the high-quality medical services found throughout Costa Rica.
